Make this classic Southern Blackberry Dumplings recipe for a comforting dessert. Tender biscuit dumplings simmer in sweet, spiced blackberry syrup. This easy, one-pot recipe uses fresh or frozen blackberries and is ready fast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Combine blackberries, sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and butter in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes while you prepare the dumplings.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Pour in the milk and stir just until a soft, shaggy dough forms. Do not overmix.
  3. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough directly onto the simmering blackberry mixture, leaving a little space between each one.
  4. Cover the saucepan tightly. Reduce heat to low and cook for 15 to 18 minutes without lifting the lid. The dumplings will steam and become fluffy.
  5. Remove from heat. Let the dumplings rest, covered, for 5 minutes before serving.
  6. Serve the warm blackberry dumplings and syrup immediately. Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them before starting the recipe.
  • For a richer syrup, you can add a small splash of lemon juice to the berries while they simmer.
  • The dumplings should be tender and cooked through; test one by cutting it open if you are unsure.
