Create a truly satisfying appetizer by mastering the slow caramelization of onions. This creamy, rich dip is far superior to any store-bought version and is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for game days or holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (optional, for deeper color)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Combine the sliced onions, butter, and olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes. This process requires patience; cook for 40 to 50 minutes until the onions are deeply golden brown and sweet. Add the sugar, if using, during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
  3. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the salt and pepper. Let the caramelized onions cool for at least 15 minutes.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix until completely smooth.
  5. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the cream cheese mixture. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Taste the dip and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
  7. Cover the bowl and chill the dip in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to fully meld. This is a key step for the best flavor.
  8. Before serving, garnish the top with fresh chopped chives. Serve cold with your favorite chips or vegetable sticks.

Notes

  • For an even richer flavor, you can bake the finished dip at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes until warm and bubbly.
  • If you are short on time, you can use a slow cooker to caramelize the onions on low for 4 to 6 hours.
  • This dip tastes better the next day, making it an excellent make-ahead appetizer for parties.
