Ingredients
Scale
1 pound bulk pork sausage, cooked and drained
1 (10.5-ounce) package frozen hash browns, thawed
1 (14.5-ounce) loaf sourdough bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
1 cup shredded sharp white cheddar cheese
6 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread the thawed hash browns evenly over the bottom of the dish.
Sprinkle the cooked sausage evenly over the hash browns.
Distribute the sourdough bread cubes over the sausage layer.
Mix the Gruyère and cheddar cheeses together. Sprinkle half of the cheese mixture over the bread.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until fully combined. This creates your rich custard.
Pour the egg mixture slowly and evenly over the bread and sausage layers. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the liquid.
Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight. This step is key for a stress-free holiday morning.
When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the plastic wrap.
Sprinkle the remaining half of the cheese mixture over the top of the casserole.
Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving this family gathering breakfast dish.
Notes
For a Martha Stewart inspired variation, use high-quality sourdough bread and fresh grated Gruyère cheese for the best texture and flavor.
If you need to speed up the morning, you can assemble this casserole up to 24 hours in advance.
This recipe is excellent for feeding a crowd; easily double the ingredients for a larger gathering.
