Make crispy, restaurant-style Bang Bang Shrimp at home. This recipe delivers the famous creamy, spicy sauce and a satisfying crunch, perfect as an appetizer or weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp: Pat the shrimp completely dry with paper towels. This helps the coating stick.
  2. Mix the dry coating: In a shallow dish, whisk together the flour, salt, pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Mix the wet batter: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and milk until combined.
  4. Coat the shrimp: Dip each shrimp first into the wet batter, letting excess drip off, then dredge thoroughly in the dry coating mixture, pressing lightly to adhere. Place coated shrimp on a plate.
  5. Heat the oil: Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
  6. Fry the shrimp: Working in batches to avoid overcrowding, carefully place the coated shrimp into the hot oil. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Drain the shrimp: Remove the fried shrimp with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain excess oil.
  8. Make the Bang Bang Sauce: In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, softened cream cheese, Sriracha, honey, and garlic powder. Whisk until the sauce is smooth and the cream cheese is fully incorporated.
  9. Toss and serve: Place the warm, crispy shrimp in a large bowl. Pour the sauce over the shrimp and gently toss until every piece is evenly coated. Serve immediately as a flavorful shrimp dinner or appetizer.

Notes

  • For an air fryer shrimp recipe, spray the coated shrimp lightly with cooking spray and air fry at 380°F (195°C) for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until crispy.
  • To achieve a Bonefish Grill copycat texture, ensure your oil temperature is correct for a quick, crisp fry.
  • You can serve this as a shrimp tacos filling over shredded cabbage for added crunch.
