Make a rich and creamy hot chocolate from scratch on your stovetop. This recipe uses simple pantry staples to create a decadent warm chocolate drink that tastes much better than instant packets.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional, for extra richness)

Instructions

  1. Combine the milk, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. Whisk the mixture constantly over medium heat until the sugars dissolve and the mixture is hot, but do not let it boil.
  3. If using, stir in the chocolate chips until they melt completely and the cocoa is smooth.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the rich and creamy hot chocolate into mugs. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For an extra decadent warm chocolate drink, use high-quality cocoa powder.
  • You can substitute any milk for whole milk, but whole milk yields the creamiest result.
  • Top with homemade marshmallows or a sprinkle of cinnamon for a gourmet hot cocoa experience.
